Spaceships

The spaceships in Quantum Expanse vary in size and configuration. Each type of ship has a specific role it plays on the battlefield. There are four major types of ships in the game, escorts, cruisers, capital ships, and carriers.

Escorts

Escort ships are the smallest, least armored, and have the lowest amount of firepower. They provide the fleet with its primary scouting ability, its major stealth support, and the bulk of its defensive capabilities. Without escort ships a fleet is virtually blind, is easier to detect, and is much more venerable to missile, torpedo, and fighter wing attacks. What escort ships lack in armor and firepower they greatly make up for in raw speed and while one escort ship is relatively easy to defeat a swam of them is much harder to eliminate. Escort ships are comprised of corvettes, frigates, and destroyers.

Corvette Classes

The corvettes are very fast scout ships. They field dual sensor arrays allowing them to detect multiple opposing ships are very long ranges. Their greatly enhanced scanning ability and raw speed comes at the expense of weapons and armor. Corvettes mount one small weapon battery, typically either a pulse laser turret or a bank of torpedo launchers. Their minimal weaponry generally limits their combat capability to fleet defense or support.

Frigate Classes

Frigates are slightly larger ships than the corvettes. They are designed primarily for fleet stealth support. They mount two stealth drone launchers making them excellent choices for admirals seeking to hide their fleet’s movements early in the engagement. While frigates also mount a sensor array it is less effective than the corvette’s system, but it does afford them the ability to detect an opposing spaceship at medium range. They offer slight improvements in armor and weaponry than the corvettes, but not enough to make them a major threat on battlefield. Like the corvettes, frigates mount one small weapon battery, typically either a pulse laser turret or a bank of torpedo launchers. Their minimal weaponry generally limits their combat capability to fleet defense or support.

Destroyer Classes

The destroyers are responsible for the bulk of the fleet’s active defenses that are used to reduce the impact strength of opposing missile, torpedo, and fighter wing attacks. Their dual large active defense batteries make short work of incoming projectiles and keep fighter wings at bay preventing a good deal of damage to the fleet. Due to the short range of the active defense system most destroyers remain close to the larger warships in the fleet. Destroyers have a sensor array, but it is less effective than the corvette’s system allowing the detection of an opposing spaceship at medium range. They offer slight improvements in armor and weaponry than the corvettes, but not enough to make them a major threat on battlefield. Like the corvettes and frigates they mount one weapon battery, typically either a pulse laser turret or a bank of torpedo launchers. Their minimal weaponry generally limits their combat capability to fleet defense or support.

Cruisers

Cruisers are larger, better armed, and have greater firepower than the escort ships. They form the backbone of most fleets. Their versatility allows them to perform the roles of the escort ships, but at a greatly reduced capacity. What cruiser’s lack in scanning, stealth support, and defensive abilities they make up for in the ability to deal and withstand punishment from opposing attacks without a great loss in speed and maneuverability. Cruiser types ships are comprised of light cruisers, cruisers, and battlecruisers.

Light Cruiser Classes

Light cruisers provide their fleet with the ability to launch a stealth drone to help mask their ships position during the early stages of the battle. Their sensor array  is less effective than the corvette’s system, but it does afford them the ability to detect an opposing spaceship at medium range. Light cruisers have a small active defense battery allowing them to assist in the defense of the fleet against incoming missile, torpedo, and fighter wing attacks. Their armor is similar to the destroyer, but they mount a second small weapon battery making them more effective in combating opposing spaceships. Light cruisers mount plasma/ion, missile/torpedo, or missile/laser weapon batteries. A light cruiser also has one damage control system allowing it to make minor repairs on the battlefield.

Cruiser Classes

Cruisers are the heart and sole of any fleet. While their small sensor array allows them to detect an opposing vessel, its minimal size limits it to a short range. The firepower of a cruiser is greatly improved over all smaller spaceships with two dual medium sized weapon batteries. The cruiser’s multiple weapon batteries keeps it in action even after taking opposing weapon fire. Cruiser field the following weapon configurations, missile/laser, plasma/ion, and missile/torpedo. The armor on the cruisers is also improved. Their small damage control system allows for minor field repairs while their small active defense system provides some protection against incoming missile, torpedo, and fighter wing attacks.

Battlecruiser Classes

Battlecruisers continue the improvements in armor and weaponry allowing them to become a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield. While they only offer the same number of weapon batteries as a cruiser, their weapon batteries are much stronger. Typical weapon batteries are plasma/ion, missile/torpedo, and torpedo/laser. They are the first ship type to offer a flag bridge, allowing the ship to act as a flag ship and a focal point for the fleet admiral. While their small sensor array allows them to detect an opposing vessel, its minimal size limits it to a short range.  Their small damage control system allows for minor field repairs.

Capital Ships

The capital ship types are the primary warships of the fleet with the largest weapons and the most armor. Their mere presence on the battlefield causes them to become the center of action. Capital ships lack the capability to detect opposing ships, provide stealth support, or defend themselves or other ships against missile, torpedo, or fighter wing attacks causing them to rely heavily on their escorts and to some extent their their cruisers to provide these abilities.

Battleship Classes

Battleships are the smallest capital ships, but their weaponry and armor is an improvement over the battlecruisers. Battleships have a medium sized damage control system allowing them to make moderate field repairs during the battle. Their increased armor allows them to take a good deal more punishment than smaller spaceships. They are the first type of spaceships to field three weapon systems. Their typical weapon batteries are missile/torpedo/laser, missile/ion/plasma, ion/plasma/torpedo, and torpedo/ion/plasma. They lack sensors, active defenses and stealth support capabilities making them reliant on the escorts and cruisers for support.

Dreadnaught Classes

Dreadnaughts are medium sized capital ships designed to take and deal out a higher amount of damage than the battleships. Their primary weapon system provides a massive amount of firepower while their secondary and tertiary weapon batteries are similar in strength to the battleship. They field a large damage control system which allows for major field repairs during battle. They lack sensors, active defenses and stealth support capabilities making them reliant on the escorts and cruisers for support.

Titan Classes

Titan class warships are massive capital ships. Their armor and weaponry is second to none allowing them to deal devastating blows to opposing space fleets. Like the dreadnaughts, their primary weapon system packs a massive punch, but their secondary and tertiary weapons systems are larger making them a greater threat on the battlefield. Their thick armor plates allow the titans to absorb many attacks and their large damage control system provides these ships with major field repair capability allowing them to stay in the battle longer. As with all other capital ships, they lack sensors, active defenses and stealth support capabilities making them reliant on the escorts and cruisers for support.

Carriers

The carrier ship types carry fighter wings that allow them to project a great deal of firepower on the battlefield, but carriers are lightly armored than other spaceships. Carriers vary in size to fit their role in the fleet. Light carriers are faster and more agile allowing them to keep up with fleets comprised of smaller vessels, while the heavy carriers carry more fighter wings for greater firepower. Fighter wings are small groups of multiple fighters that operate together. Each fighter wing acts as a weapon system for their controlling carrier.
